How to play Sea Battle
Hide your fleet, then take turns firing at your opponent’s sea. Sink every ship to win.
Goal
Sink your opponent’s whole fleet before they sink yours.
Setup
Two players, a 10 × 10 sea each. Rows are lettered A–J from the top and columns numbered 1–10 from the left, so every square has a name like B7. Who fires first is drawn at random every game.
Your fleet
The Classic fleet is a Carrier (5 squares), Battleship (4), Cruiser (3), Submarine (3) and Destroyer (2); its ships may lie side by side. The Flotilla is the traditional ten-ship Sea Battle fleet — a Battleship (4), two Cruisers (3), three Destroyers (2) and four Patrol boats (1) — and no two of its ships may touch, not even at a corner.
Deploying
Your fleet starts in a random legal layout. Tap Shuffle for a new one, or tap a ship to pick it up, then tap a square to move its bow there, or Rotate to turn it. When you are happy, tap Ready. Your opponent can never see where your ships are; the battle starts once both fleets are ready.
Firing
On your turn, tap a square on the enemy sea to aim, then Fire. Every shot is called a miss (a white splash) or a hit (a red flame). When every square of a ship has been hit, it is sunk and named, and its outline appears on the chart. A square can only be fired at once.
Taking turns
In the standard rules you fire one shot a turn, hit or miss. With “Hit fires again” on, a hit earns another shot straight away and your turn only ends on a miss.
Your sea
Your own sea shows your ships and every shot your opponent has fired at them, so you can see what is still afloat.
Winning
The first player to sink every ship in the other fleet wins. Once the game is over, both fleets are revealed.
Resigning
Resigning ends the game and gives your opponent the win. Leaving a game in progress does the same.
These are the rules Piece of Cake plays, word for word: the same rulesheet is in the app under Help → Sea Battle. Every roll, deal and move is checked on our servers, so nobody can bend them.
