How to play Reversi
Trap your opponent’s discs between your own to turn them your colour. Most discs at the end wins.
Goal
Have more discs of your colour on the board than your opponent when the game ends.
Setup
Two players on an 8 × 8 board. Columns are lettered a–h from the left and rows numbered 1–8 from the top, so every square has a name like d3. The game starts with four discs in the middle: two black, two white, set crosswise. Colours are drawn at random when the game starts, so a rematch on the same table usually swaps who goes first. Black always moves first.
Placing a disc
On your turn, tap one of the highlighted squares to place a disc there. A move is only allowed if it traps at least one straight line of your opponent’s discs — across, down or diagonally — between the new disc and another of yours.
Turning discs
Every line of your opponent’s discs your new disc traps is turned over to your colour, in all eight directions at once. Discs turned this way can be turned back later.
Passing
If you have no square that traps anything, you pass and your opponent moves again. Passing is automatic, and you can never pass while you have a move.
Winning
The game ends when neither player can move — usually because the board is full. Whoever has more discs of their colour wins; the same number each is a draw.
Tips
Corners can never be turned, so they are worth fighting for. Be wary of the squares right next to an empty corner, which often hand it to your opponent. Early on, having fewer discs and more choices of move is usually stronger than grabbing as many as you can.
Resigning
Resigning ends the game and gives your opponent the win. Leaving a game in progress does the same.
